Fruitful Callander Meeting

On Friday 1st July, Fruitful Callander had an extremely positive meeting with Stirling Council Land Services. Land Services were broadly supportive of the aims of 'Fruitful Callander'. If you'd like to see the full minutes of the meeting please contact me (Stew Talbot) or Astrid from Callander & Climate Change or leave a comment below.

Inspirational visit to Linlithgow!

Mandy and I went to Linlithgow for a visit and discuss all local food projects. It was truly inspirational.

We visited their Vegetable Demo Garden and thought it a wonderful idea. They run 'grow your own' courses throughout the year on this plot which then produces fruit and veg for the courses' participants. The actual growing area is of a reasonable size (103 square meters) and we intend to look very hard for a similar plot here in Callander where we could start digging and running courses from February next year, for a few months at least, hopefully longer. Help us find one!

Also, Transition Linlithgow had a lovely leaflet with information on local food production and selling points in the town, including information on courses, recipes and more. It would be a good idea to do something similar for Callander. Mandy and I will start working on this after the summer. Send us your favourite 'local food' place in town and we will add it to the list.

Food Courses in Callander July/August

For your information, 2 food courses will be held in Callander in July and August.

1. A Permaculture Introduction Course with James Chapman (16th/17th July). We still have a few places available. Costs are £30 for the weekend, including lunch, but let us know if that's a problem. We can create bursary places. The course will explain the basics of Permaculture and how we can intelligently design for sustainable living. Highly recommended course!

2. Wild Food foraging course with Margaret Lear (13th August). Free day course! We will prepare a meal together with the results of our foraging and Margaret will tell us all about the food to be found right on our door step.

If you are interested, send us your contact details.

Roadside Veggies

Wandering through Stirling this morning I spotted this veggie patch growing tomatoes, beans and sweetcorn on the side of the road instead of the usual dull bedding plants...
